Stone Sculpture
| Carving Process
No one technique or method is suitable for all carving. Every
block of stone or marble demands a slightly different approach
to the next piece because of it's own unique nature. Depicted
below is the method I chose to carve the Giant.
This project was begun in late October 1998 and was completed
by April 1999. The sculpture is now owned by The
Ritz Hotel London. |

1. The block of stone is broken down in to main
planes or areas, following form of the desired shape.

2. Surface is drilled to various desired depths
and unwanted material removed.

3. Main forms are rounded, following the movement
of the curve through chest.

4. Definition of hair and facial features
begins.

5. Tool marks are removed with flat chisels.

7. Hair and muscular definition are further
improved.

8. Finally, all surfaces are meticulously
finished.
